What to bring – and what not to bring

Below is the required list of things that you will need to bring with you, plus also some suggestions for other items.

What to bring – and what not to bring – Pen y Cae operates a ‘Leave no Trace’ policy

What we provide:

Sleeping stuff – we only supply camping mats.

Cooking stuff – pots, pans, kettle, mugs, plates and cutlery are provided.

Cleaning stuff – appropriate domestic cleaning products, broom, dustpan & brush.

Heating stuff – there will be kindling and firewood for the Esse cooker and the open fire.

Wet stuff – there is hot & cold running water, 3 toilets and 2 showers. Pen y Cae’s water comes from it’s own spring so you will literally be drinking in the landscape…

What to bring

1. Bring sleeping bags or equivalent, pillows etc..

2. For additional comfort you may wish to bring an additional sleeping mat each.

3. Food stuff – bring what you need to eat for the whole of your stay. See comment about ‘local’ shop below!  Please note that there is NO fridge. For short stays in the warmer months a cool-box could be considered.

4. Bring your own household matches or long nosed lighter.

5. Washing and drying – bring your own towels, tea towels, soap and shampoo.

6. Toilet rolls / Kitchen roll.

7. Torches. When it gets dark at Pen y Cae, it gets really dark.  USB-chargeable torches are especially useful, as there are some USB charging points on site.

8. Rubbish & Recycling bags to ensure that you can take EVERYTHING that you brought with you away at the end of your stay or you could lose your deposit!

9. Most importantly – bring your energy and enthusiasm to enjoy this wonderful upland landscape!

What not to bring

Do not bring any mains electrical items, there are no normal electric sockets on site, only USB chargers.    This is because Pen y Cae is off-grid, there is very limited electrical power on site, and what there is is used for low-power lighting and water filtration. The USB chargers are designed only for charging mobile phones for team leaders. There are no USB chargers upstairs. Do not bring candles or any similar naked flame lights.

Note that if you forget any of the essential items, it’s a 16 mile round-trip to the Skirrid Mountain Garage, the nearest shop. Please DO NOT phone the contact number to ask for things which you have forgotten.
