Overview

Welcome to Pen y Cae Outdoors. This old farmhouse, dating from around 1800, has just been refurbished by the local community to provide basic accommodation, on two floors, for groups of up to 12 people overnight (or 20 for daytime only use). Situated high on the Ffwddog Ridge (above the clouds on the day the picture above was taken!) about 10 miles from Abergavenny, Pen y Cae is totally off-grid and offers spectacular views over Monmouthshire. At night, enjoy the silence and stargaze in the dark skies.
Bookings for dates from 28th March 2026 are now available at https://penycaeblackmountains.wales/request-a-booking/ Please note that Pen y Cae will be closed from 1st November 2026 for the winter, to allow for essential maintenance and draining down the water supply to avoid freeze damage.
Now boasting solar power, Pen y Cae provides 3 toilets and 2 hot showers, a gas cooker, a highly efficient wood-burning cooker and a large open fire in the living room to make your stay both comfortable – but don’t expect soft furnishings -and yet in the ‘middle of nowhere’.
Don’t just take our word on how wonderful it is, see some reactions from our first overnighters below
