Why we created Pen y Cae
Pen y Cae is not a standard holiday cottage. It has been refurbished with the needs of small adult-led groups in mind, to give then a basic outdoor experience in a wild place.
It caters for two types of group:

Main groups
The groups we mostly expect to see are from not-for-profit organisation, such as DoE, Scout and Guide groups, and groups from local authorities or schools. We especially want to cater for groups of young people – who will accompanied by a resonsible adult(s). This is what the acommodation is designed for.
For 2026 season, these groups pay £75 per night, which remember is for up to 12 people, which is a bit over £6 per person per night.
But that’s not us….
If your group doesn’t fit the above defintion, then you can still stay at Pen Y Cae, and still play an important role in the project.
We set also host these other kinds of group, who maybe just want to stay as a group of friends, or have a company away weekend, or run a commercial course.
Groups like this will be charged more to stay at Pen y Cae, because they contribute to the running of the cottage, and allow us to subsidise the not-for-profit groups.
For 2026 season, these groups pay £150 per night for the whole property.
Daytime usage
Pen y Cae is also available for daytime use, when there is nobody staying for the nights before and after. We suggest that you don’t invite more than about 20 people.
For the 2026 season, the day rate is £60.
Winter closure
As Pen y Cae is completely off grid all lighting and hot water is provided by solar power. Given the lower levels of sunlight during the winter months the solar is unlikely to be able to provide the required power. Also to mitigate against frozen pipes the water system will be completely drained down during the winter months. Therefore Pen y Cae will be closed to users from the end of October each year until the middle of March the following year.
